Hello! I am Forum Enhancer and I'm here to improve your experience on the Eve forums. Eve Forums Gold is a browser user script which can modify the forums for aesthetic, workaround, or new feature purposes.
Eve Forums Gold is still in its nascent stages, but I wanted to throw it out for the community to think over and suggest some more features, as I am running low. Feedback and bug reports are welcome, as well.
Portability/security note: All Eve Forums Gold information/data is stored locally, and is completely identity-agnostic. This means that settings will carry across characters or accounts. It also means that settings and other data will not transfer across different browsers or computers. It is entirely local. This is deliberate, as it would require communication with an outside server, which is bad for your privacy/security.
Current Version: 0.1.6 (February 27th, 2014)
Feature list:
- A sweet, premium logo to remind you that you are better than the non-Gold users.
- User tagging - small text notes that allow you to better remember a user by. For example. (hi, Chribba)
- Bookmarking favorite subforums to avoid scrolling carpal tunnel and unnecessary navigation. Like this.
- Shortcut link to the last viewed post in threads you have visited before. No getting lost in threadnaughts anymore!
- Linkified author box. The corporation and alliance names a post's author are now links that actually lead to their respective Eve Gate pages.
- Killboard and DOTLAN shortcuts. There are now small icons next to characters, corporations, and alliances in author boxes that lead to useful external resources.
- No more external link warning. 'Nuff said. (Quirk: in Firefox, "open in new tab" still shows a warning; just left click and it works)
- Find a post author's next post or the next post quoting him via convenient links. Navigating conversations has just been made much easier.
- Tired of typing the same thing over and over? Say no more. You can now save things you commonly say for later use.
- Secure identity. Eve Forums Gold does not "report back" on any activity, and in fact relies on no external servers (other than imgur for a few images).
Get it here on Dropbox: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7348412/EFg/EFG.user.js . Only running through Greasemonkey and Tampermonkey is supported.
If you do not know how to use a Javascript user script, see the second post below.
If you enjoy Eve Forums Gold, give it an endorsement in by linking it in your forum sig! Everyone deserves a more enjoyable forum experience. Spread the love!

I just had a flash of inspiration and added the "go to last read post" feature to the notification popup as well! http://i.imgur.com/oj9OjEf.png
There is a small quirk in that the link only shows up when you mouse over the notification popup. This is intentional, since it means it only gets run after CCP's browser code updated all the links in the notification in the first place.

EFG 0.1.8 has been released! It contains:
- A fix for a bug where if you middle clicked "Go to last forum post" in the notification popup (to open in new tab), it would also open the thread in the current tab.
- New feature: Toggle checkbox to hide or show locked threads while browsing the forum. As discussed in F&I here.

There is a major feature release with the fresh EFG 0.2.0! The Post Prospector is a flexible search tool to let you browse threads to find posts by someone, posts quoting them, posts by any corp/alliance, or posts by their content. It also renders the old "find by author/quote" links obsolete, so those have been mostly scrapped.
Enjoy! Eve Forums Gold! New aesthetics, features, and workarounds to make your forum experience a more enjoyable one!

Eve Forums Gold 0.2.1 is out! It does not contain any new features, as it is mostly a bugfixing and refactoring update:
- A name collision between my "getUrlVars()" script and the native "getUrlVars()" script has been resolved.
- The Post Prospector has been refactored to not use global storage for its state. This means a couple things:
- --- You will now see an "&eg_prosp" argument pop up in your URLs when you do a multi-page search. It will not harm you.
- --- Conducting a search in one tab allows all other tabs to still browse, search, or do whatever at their leisure.
- --- Searches will no longer randomly resume if you force-stop them (with Esc).
- NoNom has been fixed to only redirect 404 pages that have eaten a post, not all 404 pages.
- Some general minor code restructuring for readability
Enjoy!

Eve Forums Gold 0.2.3 has been pushed out! This is again a bugfix patch, addressing:
- Visiting an earlier page in a thread no longer resets the "last page read" (going back to look at the OP won't make the forum forget where you left off reading)
- Removed a bunch of deprecated code of the old post searching mechanism
- Embedding an image or video is no longer done "inline", but rather by putting the image/video on its own line. This gives the embedding feature more UX predictability.
- Added a thin gray border to embedded images (screenshots of the forum blended in and looked weird).
- Added a CSS class to embedded images and videos to make extensions on top of them possible.

This is bizarre. It appears that CCP have started using a thing called "rum.js", which stands for Real User Monitoring, a New Relic product meant to give them data about how their site works on peoples' computers. Something about RUM is interfering with Tampermonkey and preventing it from even loading the script. Even deleting the entire Eve Forums Gold code from the script itself still causes an error.
I will try to find a way around this, but it's quite the obstacle the CCP web dev folks have put in front of me. Eve Forums Gold! New aesthetics, features, and workarounds to make your forum experience a more enjoyable one!

Malai Egivand wrote:I really like this script. Very nicely done - it adds a lot of great features to the Eve forums.
I did find one bug in the Greasemonkey script, however. It's in the create_faveadds() function. On my Firefox at least, the second GM_getResourceURL("bookmark_icon") is returning an "undefined" value, which in turn is placing a bunch of image-not-founds in the place of the pin icons on the front page.
Replacing that second GM_getResourceURL("bookmark_icon") with simply "img" fixes it. The resource gets called at the top of the function, no need to fetch it twice.
Thanks! I'll make sure to fix that.

I am not dead!
I have returned to you with a new version of Eve Forums Gold. This version is not backwards compatible with previous versions due to a major change in the way data is stored. This means you will lose all your EFG data (bookmarks, tags, canned messages, etc). Be prepared to reconstruct it. You can always keep running the legacy version 0.2.4 to access the old stuff, too.
Version 0.3.0 features:
- Complete code V3-ification. EFG's code structure has been changed to be more self-consistent, with less spaghetti code and fewer nasty hacks.
- Graceful sandboxing. Greasemonkey/Tampermonkey run EFG in a special environment for safety. EFG 0.3.0 has proper support for handling this sandboxing.
- Less injected code. The amount of Javascript code injected into the forums page is drastically reduced because of the new sandbox handling. This is a matter of Good Coding PracticesGäó, something all software projects could use more of.
- Different storage system. Instead of using weirdly-implemented "localStorage", EFG 0.3.0 uses the Greasemonkey GM_getValue (and related) functions.
- Better debugging infrastructure. Because bugs suck.
- Added Eve Gate support. "gate.eveonline.com" has been added to the domains supported by EFG. This paves the way for features to enhance Eve Gate (though there are none of those right now).
- Bugfixing. Most of it incidental to the code refactoring.
tl;dr: Version 0.3.0 has a ton of "under the hood" changes with little visible feature change. However, it paves the way for more/better future development, and avoids future code structure problems equivalent to Eve's "no character switching".
Enjoy! Eve Forums Gold! New aesthetics, features, and workarounds to make your forum experience a more enjoyable one!

Let's brainstorm some Eve Gate features. The two pages I use most are the Profile and Mail pages. Here are some things I have in mind:
Profile page
- Make the "Send a message" and "Add a contact" plus other links like that (below the portrait) look standardized no matter if it's your profile or someone else's profile that you're looking at. http://i.imgur.com/vXFyPIt.png
- Add a variety of buttons to that menu, including links to EveWho, a killboard, Eve-search (because "Latest Forum Posts" is half-broken)
- Extend the user tagging feature of EFG to cover peoples' name on their profile page, so you can see your delightful name tag there, too.
Mail page
- Turn the names of people in the mail table into links to their profiles.
That's all I got so far. Let me know if you have anything that you believe needs doing.

The old/original greasemonkey script (still on my work PC's firefox) did this. Any plan for this, or tips for where to make any appropriate modifications? Unless I've had some major hallucinations, that was never a feature of EFG. Are you thinking of another forum improvement script?
I will consider adding this as a feature. It's not that hard to do, but it will probably have to wait until I finish some sort of toggling/management for what features you actually want to use. For some people (like myself), having a page stretch its text all the way across the screen rather than in a limited box actually has a negative impact upon readability. It's a fascinating topic for web and print designers.
Alain Kinsella wrote:The 'go to last read' appears to be broken in general on this forum - I believe this was supposed to be the 'star' icon but that's not working either. I will scratch that up for my next run of bug-fixing, thanks.
Alain Kinsella wrote:Also, I tend to right-click and open links etc in new tabs. Does this break any of the features (since you're modifying via js). I use a lot of tabs too, and breaking tabbing support would be unfortunate. As of right now everything works tabbed-wise except for the "no external link warning" feature in Greasemonkey (Firefox). Trying to open a new tab with the link still displays a warning and I can't help that. A regular click opens the link in a new tab without a warning, though, and that's the most I can do.
Alain Kinsella wrote:One last one - No-Nom does not work in quick post. Thankfully the forum's Draft feature does (when timed right). Indeed it doesn't. It's not trivial to add it either, because of a difference in page structure, but I can put that on the backlog. EFG, Greasemonkey, and Firefox Support
Some of you may have noticed problems running EFG on Firefox using Greasemonkey. I can sum the situation up in two words: This sucks.
Apparently, in order to make extensions safer, the Mozilla development folks have decided to change the ways in which extensions interact with the page being viewed in Firefox. This in turn affects Greasemonkey and any scripts that run on top of it.
Eve Forums Gold accesses the page's jQuery, and uses it for reading, writing, and triggering callbacks on various actions (like clicking buttons). jQuery assumes it is not running inside an extension, and is not built to adhere to the new security requirements implemented by Firefox/Greasemonkey. As such, it is completely broken, rendering EFG completely broken as well in Greasemonkey, until I can convert it to stop using jQuery (possibly entirely).
In other, less techy words, EFG is no longer compatible with Greasemonkey, and by extension Firefox, for the near future. It sucks and I can't do anything about it right now. Sorry.

New EFG Hosting Location
Hosting on Dropbox was causing interesting issues with installing/updating the extension, so I got a rudimentary host from which to distribute EFG. It can be found here. Putting this up was a more involved process involving actually changing the way I manage version control, which is a positive change overall.
I will update the OP with this new information as soon as I finish posting news updates.

Forum Changes and the Future
There have been (gasp) changes announced to the way the forum works. I'm the last person who would complain about the forums getting less bad, but this has serious implications for EFG support. The announced changes look like they involve major restructuring of the way pages are built, with a possible significant change in Javascript interactiveness underpinning too.
What does this mean? When these changes arrive, EFG will in all likelyhood break horribly.
What does this mean for the future? The combination of CCP starting work on the forum again and the Firefox problems detailed in above posts demands a lot of involved changes to the code. It may be that a complete rewrite is in the works. Whether that happens or not, expect instability and downtime. I can't do anything about that, unfortunately.

Github would be optimal, but unfortunately due to some carelessness on my part, the git history of the repository contains my real name, which I would like to remain private. It's the same reason I haven't registered a domain for this particular server.

The new forums are up at https://forums.testeveonline.com/. As EFG is currently written, it won't apply to them at all (as it's a different domain name). However, if you edit the script and add the following two lines in the header, you can make it apply to them:
I'm looking at the interaction of EFG and the new forums and it looks more and more likely that this is indeed the appropriate time for a from-scratch rewrite of EFG. Let me know if you all have any thoughts on the matter.

If you would like to review my code, that is incidentally also how you do that.
As is, it looks like almost all EFG features got broken by the new forums. I'm keeping a tally and it's not making me very happy .

Okay, I completed my inspection of what is/isn't working on the new forums.
- EFG Logo: broken
- Post prospector: broken
- User tagging: broken
- "Last read" link (on the post): working
- "Last read" link (in the notification menu): broken, but now redundant since the forum does it itself
- Skipping external link warnings: broken
- Canned posts: broken
- Hide locked threads: broken
- No-Nom: broken
 - Author box link tweaking: working
- Author box DOTLAN/ZKB links: working
- Media preview: renders, but bugged
Looks like I got plenty of work ahead.

Bad news. Firefox's obnoxious new security features are completely obstructing development and compatibility of EFG with Greasemonkey. Development for Chrome's Tampermonkey is unhindered, but this leaves EFG's future questionable, having to follow one of the following possibilities:
- Tell Firefox it sucks, permanently drop Greasemonkey support, and stick to Tampermonkey and Google Chrome. Downside: No Firefox support.
- Scrap EFG as a user script, and implement it instead as a separate extension for Firefox and Chrome. Downside: Outside my current expertise, and possibly outside the amount of effort I can/want to dedicate to it.
- Scrap EFG as a user script, and implement it on top of an existing cross-browser compatibility addon (Crossrider?). Downside: same as coding it as an extension of its own.
- Pass EFG to someone else who can dedicate the time/effort necessary to make it into what it deserves to be. Downside: who?
- Declare EFG dead. Downside:

I'm not sure where to go at this point, so I would like to ask you, the users, for your thoughts. So... Thoughts?

I have also gotten some out-of-forums feedback supporting Option #1, so... Option #1 it is, then! Firefox/Greasemonkey are no longer supported! That felt good to say.
Dropping support for Firefox/Greasemonkey has allowed me to go back to the jQuery-enabled version of EFG and make it compatible with the new forums instead. Since I already had some progress towards doing that, I am happy to say that it is finished and version 0.4.0 is out! Summary of changes:
- Tweaks and fixes to almost all features to fix them for the new forum layout, link structure, etc.
- Added support for (forums/gate).testeveonline.com
- Fixed embedded media bug in which embedded images were not showing up properly.
- Added better handling and suppression of debug messages (you guys should not see unnecessary debug messages anymore).
- Added better error handling so a single feature breaking does not break the rest of EFG.
Enjoy!

While I am working on other features, I would like to prod you all for your opinions on a major possible feature addition to EFG:
Local Chat Channel
Local Chat would be a small box in the bottom left of the screen which shows who else is viewing the same thread/topic at that time, and lets you talk to them live. This would be completely opt-in; no forcing people into the chat. However, when you're in the chat, you show up in the chat list.
Pros:
- Better direct conversation, helping with quick back and forth discussions.
- Better connection with other forum users; a more "fun" experience.
- Who doesn't want to talk smack in General Discussion?
- Opt-in, so everyone knows what they're getting into.
- Bold feature to offer to draw more users in to using EFG.
- Possibility: include separate thread, subforum, and forum-wide chat channels.
Cons:
- The "no external communication" bit of EFG would go out the window; a central chat server would be required.
- Users would need to trust me to be ethical with their communications. I swear I am not Big Brother. However, I would keep logs for accountability purposes (I would rather not enable illegal communication).
- Chat would be unmoderated by ISD CCL (outside their job) or by me (I have better stuff to do), with all the mess that implies.
- As per forum rule #35, chat logs may not be pasted in the forums. Users would need to keep this in mind.
What are your thoughts? Would anyone actually use it or would I just be wasting a lot of time writing it?

Makari Aeron wrote:If you went with the Local Chat Channel I would hazard to say you should make it an IRC. That way there's minimal strain on your server as well as the removal of chat logs from your side thus less space taken up. However, it would be nice (if possible) to store the chatlogs in the temporary internet files for each user. I like IRC, but unfortunately making it simply connect to an IRC server is extremely difficult to impossible. Reasons:
- Javascript in a browser cannot do arbitrary network communication. It can only do HTTP type stuff. The IRC protocol is significantly different, so I'd have to "bounce" the connection through my server anyway.
- I could make my server be an IRC server that knows how to interact with the forums, but that opens a whole bunch of other cans of worms, like security, random channels, and proper behavior when using the EFG client.
So, sorry. I can't make it IRC. I can make it "IRC-like" in usage though, which I was sort of planning on doing anyway.

Version 0.4.2 is out, with a fix for how canned messages work. Pasting a canned message used to replace the entire text of a post. Now, it will either insert the text at where the caret is in the text (the | looking thing that you type with), or replace a selection if you have something selected.

Are you sure it's turned on? Tampermonkey can turn scripts on and off. When you click on the tampermonkey button in Chrome, the circle next to Eve Forums Gold should be green, not red. If it's red, click it to enable EFG.
If that's not the case, let me know so I can look into it further.

Hmm... This needs debugging.
Could you go into EFG's source (as described here) and find the line that says:
EFG_DEBUG = false;
Change that to:
EFG_DEBUG = true;
This will make EFG give a bunch more feedback on how it's running and any errors it's encountering. Hit Ctrl+S to save it.
To get the debug info, hit F12 (which brings up the developer tools at the bottom of your screen), select the "Console" tab, and then load a page on the forum. The console should look something like this: http://i.imgur.com/kAGUGVE.png
If you could select everything in that console, paste it on http://pastebin.com, then put the link in here, I can look for any problems EFG is running into.
Sorry it's so complicated, but it's the only way to debug something like this. Thanks!

The only way I am able to reproduce this is by a) not turning debug mode on, and b) by clicking on the [+] next to my screenshot showing the console (the presence of which means EFG is working).
Are you absolutely sure that you turned debug mode on, and more importantly, that EFG is not working? These are some indications it is working. Sorry if my questions seem dumb; I'm not trying to be condescending, I'm just sort of baffled.
Ed: I just realized, do you mean it's not working as in the "Gold" logo is not showing up? That is indeed broken. It's the last thing I need to fix after the change in forum layout. So... yeah, the logo doesn't work. Everything else should.

Quick question though; Do you have any idea what might be causing the Pilot/Corp/Alliance details and links (Dotlan/zkb) to not appear? The "tag used" is there. But not the other functionality. http://i.imgur.com/eDdfKfd.png
Thanks, --Al Whoa, blank space? And "Likes received" not even showing up? It looks like a forum bug to me, since nothing that EFG is doing should remove the corp/alliance links, and especially not the "Likes received" (which I do nothing to). I will check it out anyway, and let you know if I find anything. Thanks for letting me know!
I'm starting to think a "control panel" for EFG might be a good idea. A place for errors to get recorded, and for features to get switched on/off. It would make everyone's life much easier.

They work for me. I see this frequently when debugging and comparing versions of EFG. It happens when multiple versions of EFG are running at the same time on the same page, which results in things it does being duplicated. The bizarre bit is that Tampermonkey reports only one script is running (the 1 on its icon).
I tried reproducing the problem with my browser, and it looks fine to me: http://i.imgur.com/nncv9hE.png. Are you sure you have not awakened Skynet or something?
I joke, but I am completely baffled. At this point, I would just suggest removing Tampermonkey entirely, then reinstalling it and EFG. I don't have any certainty that will make it work, but it certainly can't shouldn't break stuff more, and I have no other ideas. Sorry!

I can't find any option of "Go to last read" in the notification popup. Is it still available?
CCP properly implemented a server-side version of this feature as part of their forum upgrade. Simply clicking on the notification brings you to the new post now, rather than the old behavior of just taking you to the OP. That made the EFG feature obsolete, so I removed it.
Optimally, this should happen to all EFG features in time, since it means the forums are getting better and not needing a crutch to be usable anymore.
Regnar Avastum wrote:Also, the script magically disappeared for some reason and I lost all the tags I set up. Is there any way to back them up? I do not have a way to back up the database right now. That's a good idea for a future feature, though. Thanks for the input!
Regnar Avastum wrote:You can't seem to set up tags while in the "Inbox", pressing enter after typing does nothing. I can confirm this bug, and I will look into fixing it. Thanks!
Would a more generic feature of "add whatever link you want to the favorites, with whatever title you want" do? It's less hackish to do, and involves less of me trying to figure out where in the UI it best fits.
